The Hub Criativo do Beato is investing in sustainability by creating a Living Laboratory
The Hub Criativo do Beato (HCB) Living Lab is a project that promotes the development of new technologies and services to mitigate the impact of climate change, while also promoting the sustainability of the business ecosystem that is growing in the eastern part of Lisbon. Among the main measures is the constitution of an energy community, the creation of spaces for urban agriculture, intelligent energy and lighting systems, neutrality in public transportation, circular economy projects in the HCB food chain, among others. The execution of the project is expected to last for three years, ending in 2024.
In line with the focus on HCB's environmental sustainability, Startup LisboaStartup Lisboa, the entity responsible for the management of HCB, with the technical coordination of Lisboa E-Nova, and in partnership with the Lisbon City Council, saw its application for the Environment, Climate Change and Low Carbon Economy" program approved, with partial funding from the EEA Grants(1)for the implementation of pilot projects for living decarbonisation and climate change mitigation laboratories through the HCB Living Lab project, a cross-cutting project that will live in the space of the new Hub Criativo do Beato.
The projects to be developed in this living lab intervene in four priority areas: Energy, Buildings, Mobility and Circular Economy & Environment. Through different means and activities, HCB LL will support the creation of an innovation ecosystem, for urban transformation, through a series of actions promoted in collaboration with partners, some of whom are residents of HCB: Carris, Circular, DST Solar, Innovation Point, Mota-Engil Renewing, Praça, Prio-Bio, Schréder, The Browers Company and Watt IS.
According to the executive director of Startup Lisboa, Miguel Fontes: “the objective is to create a living laboratory in the Hub Criativo do Beato that allows testing, demonstrating, affirming and promoting the development of innovative technological solutions that contribute to the improvement of the project's environmental sustainability, with a view to increasing resilience and the capacity to respond to climate change, ensuring the active involvement of citizens, companies, public authorities and local universities ”.
This initiative will make the HCB a large-scale demonstration space, a smart campus where the actions, solutions and services implemented are expected to demonstrate the potential for replicating approaches in a real urban environment.
About Hub Criativo do Beato:
Hub Criativo do Beato is the space that is being born in the former Military Maintenance (manufacturing plant of the Portuguese Army), and that will welcome one of the biggest poles of innovation and entrepreneurship in Europe. There will be 18 buildings, spread over about 35 thousand square meters, of recognized industrial and architectural value, which are being converted to receive a set of national and international entities in the areas of technology, innovation and creative industries that position Lisbon as an open, entrepreneurial and a world reference city.

Through the Agreement on the European Economic Area (EEA), Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway are partners in the internal market with the Member States of the European Union. As a way of promoting a continuous and balanced strengthening of economic and trade relations, the parties to the EEA Agreement have established a multiannual Financial Mechanism, known as the EEA Grants. The EEA Grants aim to reduce social and economic disparities in Europe and to strengthen bilateral relations between these three countries and the beneficiary countries.
