Used cooking oil is a residue with a high potential for contamination of water resources when not properly deposited. However, they can become a more sustainable source when transformed into biodiesel, as they emit about 85% less CO2 than conventional diesel, avoiding the need to use fossil fuels.

With a view to exploring the advantages of this residue, which is quite common in Portuguese cuisine, a system for the collection of used cooking oil will be implemented in Hub Criativo do Beato and its surroundings, namely in homes and local establishments. This collection aims at the production of advanced biodiesel, a process that will be conducted by Prio in its refineries, being later used by Carris in routes that will serve the Hub Criativo do Beato daily.

In addition to mitigating the environmental impact, Beato BioBus intends to promote the use of public transport among the members of the HCB community, as well as raise public awareness of the advantages and importance of adopting more sustainable behaviors.

Buses Powered by 100% Renewable Energy Produced from Used Cooking Oil Begin Operation in Lisbon

The ‘Beato Biobus,’, a bus route operated by CARRIS that gives a new life to used cooking oils, starts operation today. As part of this pilot project, buses on the 794 route will use this type of energy – ZERO Diesel B100 – produced from used cooking oil, promoting the circular economy.

The ‘Beato Biobus’ is an initiative integrated into the Beato Living Lab, co-financed by the ‘EEA Grants’ programme, and brings together CARRIS, PRIO, Unicorn Factory Lisboa / Startup Lisboa, Lisboa E-Nova, and the Lisbon City Council. Part of the used cooking oil converted into energy is collected from 15 schools in the Eastern area of Lisbon, involving over 4500 students from preschool to secondary school and the entire school community in this innovative solution. The oils are then sent to PRIO’s Production Centre in Ílhavo, Aveiro, and transformed into ZERO Diesel B100, a biofuel supplied to CARRIS to operate the route dubbed ‘Beato Biobus.’

With this action, CARRIS and PRIO aim to contribute to reducing CO2 emissions by about 400 tonnes per year, promote waste recycling, and decrease the import of energy resources.

The Route 794 is one of the routes serving the Unicorn Factory Lisboa – Beato Innovation District, a symbol of innovation in the city of Lisbon; it traverses the area of the city where the schools involved in the collection of used cooking oils (UCO).

The ‘Beato Biobus’ is also part of the strategy to transform the Beato Innovation District into a Smart Campus, aiming to implement urban strategies for its sustainability and environmental resilience.

The aim of the project is the production of biodiesel for CARRIS buses from used cooking oil collected in selected locations in the parishes of the eastern area of Lisbon, creating a route powered by ‘Zero Diesel’. Smart cooking oil recycling bins were distributed in 10 schools and the 1st edition of the Beato Biobus School Competition was launched.

This operation was launched in the second half of 2021, allowing the potential use of a fuel developed by PRIO in the Biofuels Factory in Aveiro in several CARRIS buses. This fuel, produced entirely from residual raw materials, allows reducing by 84% the greenhouse gas emissions of traditional fossil fuels, with no need to make any changes to the engines.

Pedro Boga, Chairman of the Board of Directors of CARRIS, says: “This project is an example of how you can act on a local level, thinking about global issues. CARRIS is very proud to be able to explore its potential to reach the population of Lisbon, in a project that combines environmental education with fighting climate change and raising awareness about waste recycling. It is a remarkable case of circular economy, at a time when the importance of reducing oil imports and greenhouse gas emissions could not be more on the agenda.”

For Anabela Antunes, PRIO Bio’s COO, member of the PRIO Executive Commission says: “This joint initiative with CARRIS consolidates the use of biodiesel in dedicated fleets, with a biofuel with 0% fossil energy, produced from used cooking oil. The contribution of residual raw materials to produce biofuels is very relevant and it is important to raise citizens’ awareness on the importance of collecting used cooking oils, thus contributing to sustainable mobility and enhancing the circular economy.”

In addition to the objectives set with the EEA Grants, PRIO and CARRIS will use the synergies to study and monitor the performance of the vehicles, which will allow the publication of a case study on the performance of buses based on different types of energy.

THE PROJECT BEATO BIOBUS JOINS CARRIS AND PRIO FOR DECARBONIZING URBAN TRANSPORT

PRIO and CARRIS have joined forces to develop the Beato BioBus project that will be launched in the second half of 2021 to promote sustainable mobility in the city of Lisbon, creating a bus route powered by Zero Diesel.

This fuel developed by PRIO in the Biofuel Factory in Aveiro and which is produced entirely through residual raw materials is a “totally petroleum-free diesel” that allows an 84% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of traditional fossil fuels, with no need to make any changes to the engines. In total, there will be up to 8 buses powered by Zero Diesel and that will serve the Beato Creative Hub, already from the second half of 2021.

In order to promote the circular economy, several advanced and simple containers will be installed in the Hub Criativo do Beato area in order to collect the largest possible amount of used cooking oil that will be transformed into biofuel to supply the buses that will serve the area. The two companies expect that with the Beato BioBus it will be possible to save more than 400,000 litres of diesel and around 1,118 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year.

This operation is the result of Startup Lisboa’s application, with the technical direction of Lisboa E-Nova, to the EEA Grants, Notice #4, and Environment Program for the creation of the Hub Criativo do Beato Living Lab, which also includes 8 other operations.
